LAS VEGAS, Nov. 2, 1999 -- General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM) today made several new product, technology and service announcements to illustrate its future market strategy.

The announcements were made as part of GM's "Smart Kids' Toys" press conference during the 1999 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) convention.

Highlights of the event included the following introductions and announcements:

  • Announcement of GM's new OnStar®-based, hands-free Internet service;
  • Expansion of GM's e-commerce services and product offerings through its Service Parts Operations (SPO);
  • Introduction of the Oldsmobile Specialty Vehicle (OSV) series, and;

Internet technology weaved into future products, strategies

G. Richard Wagoner, Jr., GM President, Chief Operating Officer and host of GM's "Smart Kids' Toys" press conference said GM is helping evolve the role of the automobile with its vehicle-based Internet services. "The old models used to define personal transportation no longer apply to the changing needs of our customers in today's digital world," said Wagoner. "As the world employs new ways of using the Internet to communicate, conduct business and explore new ideas, GM will be helping fuel the change by providing innovative and useful Web-based technologies."

Wagoner pointed to the following strategic announcements as proof of GM's technology leadership:

OnStar and e-GM showcase new Internet technologies

Wagoner demonstrated how GM is meeting its promise to develop on-board Internet technologies as he unveiled the world's first personalized Web-based vehicle. Delivered through OnStar, GM’s in-vehicle safety, security and information service, the technology will soon provide hands-free, voice-activated access to the Internet in select GM vehicles.

The new service enables OnStar subscribers to retrieve personalized on-line services such as e-mail, sports and weather updates, news and market headlines, through an easy-to-use voice-prompt interface. The feature is scheduled to appear in vehicles as standard or optional equipment in the United States next year.

While OnStar is bringing the Internet into your vehicle, e-GM will be selling you high-performance parts through the Internet...

GM SPO offers new products on-line

GM's Service Parts Operations (SPO) announced plans to sell high-performance parts on-line at its GM Goodwrench Web site. The new service is designed to make shopping for specialty components as easy as surfing the Internet, putting the parts and ordering process literally at the customers' fingertips. The site marks the first time GM has made performance parts available for purchase on-line.

Seven new engines, including the GM Performance Parts LS1 V-8 for custom car and hot rod applications, will be available in early 2000 on the SPO Web site. GM Restoration Parts, owner manuals and other merchandise are currently available on-line.

GM also made the following product announcements at the "Smart Kids’ Toys" press conference:

Oldsmobile introduces strategic new vehicle line GM's Oldsmobile division unveiled the Oldsmobile Specialty Vehicles (OSV) series, a line of passenger vehicles designed to take its driver-oriented philosophy to a new level through enhanced design, powertrain and chassis elements. The OSV line includes the Alero, Intrigue and Silhouette, the three vehicles credited with decreasing the average age of Oldsmobile buyers by a decade in the past three years and increasing Oldsmobile sales by 23 percent in 1998.
New powertrains unveiled Rounding out its show of technological leadership, GM showcased its next generation of powertrains, including the durable and popular Vortec in-line engine series for trucks. The new Vortec 8100 V-8 engine offers high torque at low engine speeds to make it the preferred choice for heavy towing. The 8.1L engine replaces the previous Vortec 7.4L and 502 cubic-inch powerplants, featuring excellent emissions ratings and better acceleration than its competitors' V-10 engines.

GM also highlighted the Duramax Diesel 6600 V-8, the first product of its joint venture with Isuzu. The turbo direct-injection diesel will power the 2001 heavy-duty Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks. Duramax features improved fuel economy rated 15 to 20 percent better than the current 6.5L V-8 diesel, and 25 to 40 percent better than gasoline engines.
